Tulips are one of the most beloved flowers among many gardeners. They were loved for their unpretentiousness in agricultural technology and beautiful appearance. Read about how to plant tulips in autumn in the climatic conditions of the Moscow Region, as well as how to further care for plants.
In which month of autumn is it better to plant tulips in the suburbs
To plant tulip bulbs in the open ground is best in the autumn months. They do this so that in spring, with the onset of the thaw, plants immediately delight the eye with their flowering.
Autumn in the suburbs is cold, since the end of September the air temperature in the daytime drops to +5 ... + 10 ° C, which is most optimal for rooting flower bulbs. Such weather in the region persists until about October 20, so the time for landing should be between September 20 and October 20. Do not plant bulbs in the ground in the first decade of September, because the plant can quickly take root and grow. You should also refrain from late landing. After October 20 and November, tulip planting is not carried out due to possible frost that will harm the plant.
Choosing a place for a flower bed
Tulips are best grown in well-lit, sheltered areas. For this, flowerbeds near houses or outbuildings are great. Landing is carried out on chernozem, sandy loam, loose soils. The acidity of the soil should be neutral.
Important! When choosing a location, it is best to choose in elevated areas that will not melt when the snow melts or after heavy rain, otherwise the rhizome of the plant will rot.
Preparing the soil for planting
If the selected site has heavy, clay soil, then it is diluted with sand, which is added for digging in the amount of 10 kg per 1 m². For acidic soils, add 200 g of dolomite flour per 1 m². 2 weeks before planting the bulbs in the soil, it is necessary to carefully prepare the site. To do this, it is cleared from the remains of vegetation and weed grass. Digging 40 cm deep.
At the same time on 1 m² of area in the soil contribute:
- 200 g of wood ash;
- 15 kg of peat;
- 50 g of superphosphate;
- 25 g of ammonium nitrate;
- 30 g of potassium.
Planting bulbs
Planting tulips is a simple matter, which even a beginner gardener can do. The main thing: to take into account the planting time frame described earlier, as well as to correctly select and prepare the bulbs. For this, immediately before the planting procedure, it is necessary to sort out the planting material and throw out damaged, dry, infected with diseases or having traces of the activity of insects seeds on their surface. Good bulbs must be sanitized before planting. To do this, they are placed for 30 minutes in a slightly pink solution of potassium permanganate.
Into the ground
Having decided on the place and selecting the planting material, they begin to make furrows for the tulip rows. If the soil is overdried, it needs to be slightly moistened: 10 l of water is enough to distribute per 1 m². Furrows should be 10 cm deep for small bulbs and 15 cm for large ones. They are seated at a distance of 10 cm from each other. The gap between the furrows should be approximately 25 cm.
Landing:
- Planting material is dipped in wood ash and sand.
- Then loosely pressed to the soil.
- Fall asleep with earth.
- Pour 200 ml of water (per planting).
Important! When planting the bulbs in the ground, you can not put much pressure on them, otherwise you can damage the roots that have already appeared.
To basket
Autumn sowing of bulbs in baskets is very convenient and will protect the plantings from possible damage by rodents, which are especially active in the winter. Such seeding will also allow to save planting material until spring, after which it can easily be planted in other places.
Planting in baskets looks very profitable, because the flowers are collected in one small flowerbed and it will be easier to dig out after flowering. For planting in baskets, you will need to prepare a container that is selected by size, taking into account the fact that the bulbs should be laid out at a distance of 7-10 cm from each other.
Then prepare a special substrate, consisting of equal parts:
- sand;
- peat;
- the soil.
The resulting mixture is added:
- wood ash - 100 g;
- potassium - 30 g;
- saltpeter - 25 g.

- Pour the substrate prepared in advance into it.
- Make indentations for the bulbs of 10 cm.
- Insert planting material into the recesses and sprinkle with a substrate on top.
- Pour 1 liter of water and sprinkle the place of planting with soil.
How to plant in containers
Planting tulips in a container makes it easy to separate different varieties of plants from each other. Such seating can be made in any container. You should not spend a lot of money on the purchase of baskets and other pots. It is enough to take old vegetable boxes or cut plastic bottles.
As an example, you can take a plastic container. To plant tulip bulbs in it:
- Make small holes in the bottom of the bottle trimmer and pour pebbles for drainage to a level of 2 cm.
- On top, pour a layer of sand 5-10 cm into which the bulbs are buried.
- Add to the top with earth and pour water in an amount of 0.5–1 l.
- Mulch with peat.
Did you know? In the world there are varieties of tulips immediately with four buds.
Tulip Care
Despite the fact that tulips are unpretentious flowers, improper care of them can lead to rotting of the bulbs or wilting of foliage. That is why it is necessary to observe the periodicity in irrigation and apply fertilizers on time.
Rules for care after germination of flowers:
- After the appearance of sprouts, a thorough examination of the plant is carried out for dryness, wilting and darkening of the leaves. If any, they are dug up and destroyed.
- The soil near the sprouted bulbs is loosened in order to eliminate the problems of stagnation of moisture and enrich the rhizome with oxygen.
Proper watering
In order for the plants to be healthy and beautiful, they must be watered regularly. Drying of the soil and stagnation of moisture should not be allowed, therefore, the introduction of water under each flower should be moderate. For one plant, 200–500 ml of water is sufficient. It should be settled for 2 days and at room temperature, approximately +18 ... + 20 ° C. After each irrigation and rain, it is necessary to weed the ground. This procedure will avoid the formation of crust on the soil surface and enrich the roots with oxygen.
Fertilizer and fertilizer
During the period of intensive growth and budding, you can make 2 feeding of tulips.
Fertilizer Sequence:
- After the emergence of the sprouts, they are fed with a nitroammophos (30 g per 10 l of water). The solution is used on 1 m² of area.
- During the budding period, potash and phosphorus fertilizers are added. To do this, you can use potassium monophosphate, 10 g of which is diluted in 10 liters of water. This solution is used on 1 m² of area.
Where are tulips grown in Moscow region
In the suburbs there is a greenhouse, which is located in Kotelniki. The company LLC Greenhouse Plant supplies beautiful tulips throughout Russia. Plant workers grow flowers hydroponically, which consists in placing flowers in water with fertilizers. This technique is less costly and demanding to care than the growth of the culture in the soil. Grown products of the enterprise are sent to such large cities as Omsk, Moscow, Arkhangelsk and many others.
The enterprise employs 3 conveyors, they produce the following processes:
- separation of the bulbs from the stem;
- shortening of long stems;
- packing conveyor, on which bouquets are formed for further storage.
Did you know? Tulip petals can be eaten. They are used in many dishes instead of onions.
When to dig out tulips after flowering
It is necessary to dig out tulips after flowering after the bulbs have fully ripened, so you should not rush into the process of removing seed material from the soil. If the flowers are grown on an industrial scale, then, of course, they can be dug up immediately after flowering. But in the conditions of a usual planting in the garden, you need to wait until the bulbs fully ripen, which occurs in about 3-4 weeks. By time frame, this is the period at the end of June or the beginning of July. This time is considered optimal for the product of the process of extracting bulbs from the soil.
Digging should take place in dry weather. Bulbs are put in 2-3 layers in boxes and stored in the attic or terrace at a temperature of + 20 ° С.
In the suburbs there are good climatic conditions for the growth of tulips. They can be planted in the fall and already in the spring to get good planting material. A correctly selected period of planting bulbs in the ground will allow you to contemplate beautiful flower beds in the garden in spring.
