In the period from 2019 to 2020, the authorities of the Russian Federation plan to resolve the issue of catching sterlet fish in the waters of the Volga-Caspian basin.

According to Rosrybolovstvo employees, it’s too early to say that sturgeon fishing will be officially allowed in the coming years. However, the catch of certain fish species may well be allowed again. In particular, analysts admit, the issue of sterlet fishing can be decided in favor of fishermen.

“Right now, we are not in a position to lift the ban,” they complain at the Federal Fisheries Agency. “However, there is hope, supported by experts' forecasts, that in a couple of years the sterlet stocks in the waters of the Volga and the Caspian will probably be replenished to the proper level, and it will be possible to officially take up gear again.”

So far, the experts of the Federal Fisheries Agency are focusing on the regulation of sterlet catch: if fishing for this fish is resumed due to replenishment of stocks in Russian rivers, it will need to be adequately controlled and leakage of large volumes in one hand will not be allowed.
