Scientists of the Institute of Potato NAAS of Ukraine for the first time in their history brought colored potatoes. Varieties of colored potatoes are in high demand among buyers. This was announced by the head of the department of scientific-informational and consulting support of the Institute of Potato Production of the NAAS of Ukraine Svetlana Shmun.

“The highlight and great achievement for our scientific institution are the created varieties with colored flesh. These include Solokha. Her tuber in the context of dark purple. The pink variety is medium-late, canteen grade Khortitsa, ”she said.

According to Svetlana Shmun, the novelties were created by the method of hybridization with wild forms of potatoes. Ukrainian breeders have grown colored potatoes for the first time. One of the authors of this variety is Nikolai Furdiga.

“In this way, we are following global trends. These varieties are listed in the State Register, have already won a small niche in the restaurant business, hypermarkets. A kilogram of colored potatoes costs more than usual. Despite the price, they take it apart like hotcakes. According to our observations, young people show great interest in this product, ”said Svetlana Shmun.

According to her, colored potatoes are considered dietary and have a high content of antioxidants. The Solokha variety does not lose its color when baked. If you combine it with potatoes with white, yellow or cream pulp, you get an exclusive dish.

“This year we have concluded licensing agreements for the cultivation of Solokha and its implementation with a number of farms. Since there is not enough colored potatoes in the trading network, we plan to allocate additional areas for its cultivation, ”added Svetlana Shmun.
