Free-range laying hens in Baden-Württemberg are experiencing significant growth, as is organic production.
According to the State Statistical Office of Baden-Württemberg, in 2019 the state produced 620 million eggs. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase in production of 7% or 40 million eggs.
Large chicken farms have expanded their holdings, as well as stocks of laying hens. On average, 2.5 million breeding sites were available for 2.2 million laying hens. This is almost 140,000 breeding sites (+ 5.7%) and 110,000 laying hens (+ 5.3%) more than the average in 2018.
Over the past 10 years, global egg production has grown by 23% in real terms and by 18% in cash.
Organic production grew by more than a quarter (+ 26.2%) compared with the previous year. In absolute terms, the growth is 11.6 million eggs, as a result of which the total number of organic farms has reached 55.9 million pieces. Their share in the total volume of production in the country in 2019 amounted to 9%.
Last year, laying hens laid 155.3 million eggs. Every fourth egg produced in the country comes from this type of animal husbandry. Compared to 2018, open-field farming has a growth rate and productivity of more than 10%. In the sum of free catch and ecological animal husbandry, a third of the preserved laying hens now have access to free keeping, to walking.
Despite an increase in production (+ 3.4%), their share in total egg production in Baden-Württemberg is declining. 150 companies with 1.7 million holdings in the sex sector together produced 400 million eggs.
Production in small groups and cells is reduced over time. Production in this segment currently accounts for only 1% of the total.
