The European Commission has rejected reapproval for the use in the EU of any products containing chlorpropam (CIPC).
The European Commission has recognized the danger of using this herbicide. This chemical is used as a means to prevent the germination of potatoes.
In the UK, for example, it is used when storing 80% of this vegetable. Currently, Member States of the European Union have been invited to revoke issued permits for plant protection products containing chlorpropam as an active substance by January 8, 2020.
Maleic hydrazide, a growth regulator also used to suppress germination, has been reapproved for use, but with the condition of a change in its labeling, which may reduce its degree of use in the field.
Rob Clayton, director of sector strategy for AHDB Potatoes, a trading organization whose goal is to develop and promote the potato industry in the UK, said: “We have been closely monitoring this situation for some time, and support farmers and the industry in the transition from products containing chlorpropam , to alternatives is our top priority. ”
