In the UK, two farmers were fined £ 28,800 because 35 fish died as a result of their pollution in a pond near Retford.
Sutton Grange AD Ltd and Sutton Grange Services Ltd were prosecuted by the Environmental Protection Agency in a case before the Mansfield Magistrate Court on Friday May 10th.
The court found that both companies were responsible for the pollution of the body of water resulting from the discharge of corn silage from the Sutton Grange Farm in Sutton Cam Lound. A member of the public notified the authorities of a possible “fish killing” at the pond behind the farm on October 19, 2015.Then, a few days later, the Environment Agency received additional reports of contamination in the same area.
Upon arrival, Agency staff found that the level of dissolved oxygen in the pond was extremely low. They also identified a blocked container with corn, containing a yellow liquid flowing from the container down the yard.
Further inspections of the object showed that the silage runoff left the shallow drainage perimeter surrounding the embankment of corn and seeped into the hatch, from where it fell into a fish pond. This led to the death of 35 fish, which also had a significant impact on the quality of groundwater. Both companies pleaded guilty to three environmental violations. Sutton Grange AD was fined £ 6,000, and Sutton Grange Services Ltd - £ 2,800. Each company was ordered to pay £ 10,000 and pay £ 170.
