For the development of winemaking in Ukraine, it is necessary at the legislative level to recognize that all regions of the country are suitable for wine production, said the head of the Association of Gardeners, Winegrowers and Winemakers of Ukraine Volodymyr Pechko.
Recognizing the whole territory of the country as suitable for winemaking will allow farmers of all regions of Ukraine to receive state compensation for laying vineyards. In turn, this will serve as an impetus to the growth of production and the development of Ukrainian winemaking.
To date, only 5 regions are considered suitable for winemaking in Ukraine: Odessa, Nikolaev, Kherson, Transcarpathian and Zaporizhzhya. But now the climate has changed a lot and grapes are already grown throughout the country.
According to Vladimir Pechko, grape varieties are grown in Lviv and Ternopol regions that can grow only in these regions. Wine produced by local masters has already gained recognition at wine-making competitions.
But farmers who make wine in “unrecognized” areas cannot take advantage of state support because they do not have the right to it.
So, in the Ternopil region there is an entrepreneur who is planning this year to lay 5 hectares of vineyards at his own expense. If the state compensated him part of the cost of planting material, he could lay 10 hectares. The same situation has developed in the Lviv and Chernihiv regions, says the head of the association.
Today, June 11, this issue will be raised at a meeting with the participation of the acting Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Olga Trofimtseva, representatives of wineries and the Association of Gardeners, Winegrowers and Winemakers of Ukraine.
