Over the year, the price of seed onions in Ukraine increased by 6.5-7 times. With the onset of warming and growth in demand for the product, its value has increased 1.5 times since the beginning of the month, Info-Shuvar analysts report.
As of April 9 of this year, wholesale markets offer seed onions at a price of 100-130 UAH / kg, while on the same date in 2018 it could be bought for 18-22 UAH / kg.
From the first days of 2019, almost 1 thousand tons of onion was sold at the Lviv wholesale market “Shuvar”. At the same time, 60% of this volume was sold in March.
Experts predict a further increase in sales of seed onions in April. In the first week of the month, market operators sold 2 times more seed onions than in the same period of 2018.
Earlier it was reported that a great stir around seed onions is observed in the western regions of Ukraine. Onions, traditionally considered a southern culture, it became possible to grow in the Carpathians, where it was not planted both on an industrial scale and in personal plots.
The changed climatic conditions of Ukraine made possible its cultivation in the West of the country. Now more and more large farms are interested in this crop, allocating sown areas for it. The population of the western regions also does not stand aside, buying seed onions for their subsidiary plots.
