The head of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, Roman Vilfand, is sure that the new year has every chance of becoming the hottest in comparison with all previous years for the entire period of conducting meteorological observations in history. The fault is the climatic phenomenon called El Nino.
The essence of this phenomenon is that the temperature of the Pacific Ocean near the equator rises, thereby causing warming in the vastness of the entire planet Earth.
According to Villefand, the water is getting warmer in these waters, especially in the last couple of months.
“Both I and my colleagues around the world are confident that we are dealing directly with the El Nino phenomenon,” Roman Villefand emphasizes. “Meteorological and geographical statistics from different countries give us every reason to predict 2019 as the warmest year in all those hundreds of years that humanity has made meteorological observations.”
Many scientists emphasize that El Nino is able to initiate extreme weather conditions associated with cycles of the frequency of occurrence of epidemic diseases. This phenomenon is also associated with an increased risk of developing dangerous diseases such as malaria, dengue fever and Rift Valley fever. It is believed that this phenomenon may be associated with the cyclical nature of wars and the emergence of civil conflicts in countries whose climate depends on El Niño. A study of the data from the beginning of the 50s of the last century to the beginning of the 21st century indicates that El Niño is associated with 21% of all civil conflicts of this period.
Farmers should also take into account all the risks that the phenomenon may entail, and thoroughly prepare their land, crops and the economy as a whole for the predicted atypical heat.
