For a dozen of his chickens, Kevin Owen has built a spacious enclosure in Hillsboro that protects birds from predators. In the aviary there are colorful houses raised above the floor, a water station, small swings made in the form of a large bird cage, preventing the chickens from getting bored.
Although they are designed for egg production, chickens are more than just poultry. Owen introduces them as relatives: silver Wyandots, buff orpingtons, black Australorps. There is even a Polish mane-rooster in the style of Albert Einstein. He has a cute disposition and allows anyone to pick themselves up.
Owen points to a Chinese Silk black bird and describes it as a little fluffy cheeky teenager - charming and independent. Right outside the fence are garden chairs, where you can often meet Owen and his family.
“We come here every day for an hour or so and just watch the birds,” says the head of the family. “We're just talking to them.” Owen and his family have been keeping chickens for three years and take this work seriously. But the more they work with birds, the more questions they have.
The breed of chicken, its weight and age directly affect the size of the egg.
